How to Report an Absence

Parents/guardians may report a student's absence at this school in one of the following ways:

  1. By Phone
Call (559) 327-3500 to report the absence.

    OR

  2. Through Parent Connection

Regular Attendance Is Critical

to Student Success

This is especially true at the intermediate school level, where students may not see their teacher every day. When students miss class, it becomes more difficult for them to stay on track academically.

However, if your student is ill, we ask that you keep them home to recover and prevent the spread of illness. When absent, students should check their teacher websites or Google Classrooms for missed assignments. Students have one day to make up work for each day absent.

Absences Affect District Funding

Actual Attendance, (SB727) has been in effect since September 1998, which changed how all schools receive state funding for attendance. This law makes school funding based strictly on students attending school, consequently, if your student is not in school for ANY reason, other than co-curricular or cleared Independent Study, the district does not receive funding. The intent of this law is to improve and encourage student attendance, therefore, your support in making sure your student attends school daily is not only vital for financial and educational reasons, but also because it’s the law.

MISSING CLASS FOR APPOINTMENTS:

If your student must leave campus for a medical or personal appointment, we ask that you try to schedule appointments during PE or elective periods to minimize the impact on academic classes. Your student’s schedule is available on Parent Connect.

To check your student out for an appointment:

  • Call the main office at (559) 327-3500 the morning of the appointment to inform the receptionist.
  • Your student will be called out of class and will be waiting in the main office.
  • A parent/guardian must sign the student out before leaving campus.
  • Upon return, please provide the office with a doctor’s note to excuse the absence.

CLEARING ABSENCES:

All absences must be cleared within 24 hours. You may use one of the following options:

Option 1: Call the attendance line at (559) 327-3500 and leave a voicemail including:

  • Your student’s first and last name (please spell the last name)
  • The date(s) of the absence and reason for the absence.
  • Whether the absence is for a full day or specific class period(s)
  • Your name and relationship to the student

Option 2: Use Parent Connection

Students with cleared absences are eligible to make up missed assignments and assessments. Excessive absences may result in a referral to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB).

INDEPENDENT STUDY & ACADEMIC RECOVERY

Site-Based Independent Study:

Students that may be absent due to illness, vacations, or other family needs, are encouraged to complete Site Based Independent Study to make up their work and absence. The principal or designee may authorize placing the student on Independent Study for up to fifteen (15) days per school year.  The absences do not need to be consecutive. Arrangements can be made once the parent requests Site Based Independent Study.  Site Based Independent Study avoids having missing work negatively affect their grade and, once completed, will result in a student’s attendance being coded as excused and not counted as an absence.  For Site Based Independent Study contracts that run through the last day of a semester/quarter, makeup work will be due two days prior to the student returning to school to avoid incomplete grades being posted to a student’s transcript/report card.

Independent Study Contracts are subject to state guidelines and may include, but is not limited to, rules regarding minimum duration, maximum duration, and virtual distance learning support and/or participation. Details to be provided at the time of request.  Independent Study may be requested through the Grizzly Cluster Office.

Academic Intervention and Recovery (AIR Time):

AIR Time is an opportunity for school site teachers to work with students for the purpose of providing grade level academic intervention and support.  AIR Time sessions can be held on weekends, during school breaks such as Spring Break and Summer, before, or after school.  AIR Time can be recommended for students that have been absent from school to provide an opportunity to learn or reinforce missed academic opportunities.

Saturday School:

Saturday School can be assigned for multiple reasons.  Students that have missed school due to uncleared, unexcused, or truant reasons can be assigned to Saturday School involuntarily.  Students assigned for other reasons can request after school detention or AIR Time instead of Saturday School.  Students attending Saturday School are required to bring classroom or homework to complete.  Academic support will be available by the Saturday School teacher.  Saturday School is held on Saturdays for between 180 and 240 minutes depending on the grade level of the students.  Breakfast and Lunch will be provided at no cost.
